Joshua T. Atkinson

Founder | Chairman | Executive Director

"An informed community is a stronger community."

Joshua T. Atkinson is the Founder, Chairman, and Executive Director of Fighting4Freeport, an independent political action committee dedicated to promoting transparency, integrity, and accountability in local government.

A United States Navy veteran with a diverse background in business operations, organizational leadership, public policy, and community advocacy, Joshua founded Fighting4Freeport after recognizing the growing need for greater public access to government information and a stronger culture of accountability at the local level.

Under his leadership, Fighting4Freeport has become a trusted source for in-depth coverage of local government, public meetings, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) investigations, budget analysis, public records research, and civic education. Rather than simply reporting events, the organization focuses on providing context, documentation, and clear explanations that help residents understand how local government decisions affect their daily lives.

Joshua believes transparency is more than a slogan—it is the foundation of public trust. His approach emphasizes thorough research, official documentation, responsible reporting, and making complex government issues accessible to every member of the community.

Throughout his career, Joshua has led organizations in both the private and nonprofit sectors, serving in executive leadership roles that required strategic planning, financial oversight, organizational development, and team leadership. Those experiences continue to shape the vision and operations of Fighting4Freeport today.

As Executive Director, Joshua oversees every aspect of the organization's operations, including investigative research, editorial direction, public records requests, strategic planning, digital media, community engagement, and organizational development.

His guiding philosophy remains simple:

An informed community is a stronger community.

About Fighting4Freeport

Fighting for Transparency. Integrity. Accountability.

Fighting4Freeport is an independent political action committee (PAC) dedicated to promoting transparency, integrity, and accountability in local government through fact-based reporting, public records research, civic education, and community engagement.

Our mission is simple:

To empower citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions about the community they call home.

We believe an informed public is essential to good government. When residents have access to accurate information, public records, and a clear understanding of how decisions are made, government becomes more transparent, elected officials become more accountable, and communities become stronger.

That's why everything we do begins with one principle:

The facts come first.

Why We Exist

Local government has the greatest impact on our daily lives.

It determines how taxpayer dollars are spent, how public safety is managed, how infrastructure is maintained, how neighborhoods grow, and how future generations will experience our community.

Yet these decisions often happen with little public awareness.

Meeting agendas are lengthy. Government documents can be difficult to understand. Public records are scattered across multiple sources. Important issues are frequently discussed long before most residents realize they exist.

Fighting4Freeport was created to bridge that gap.

We work to gather information, examine public records, explain complex issues in plain language, and make local government more accessible to everyone.

What We Do

Our work focuses on informing, educating, and engaging the community through:

  • Comprehensive coverage of City Council, committee, and other public meetings

  • Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and public records investigations

  • Budget, contract, and policy analysis

  • Publication of supporting documents, videos, and source materials

  • Educational articles explaining local government and public policy

  • Community reporting and investigative journalism

  • Election information and civic education

  • Supporting candidates who demonstrate a commitment to transparency, integrity, and accountability

Whenever possible, we publish the documents behind our reporting so readers can review the information for themselves.

Our goal is not simply to report what happened—but to help explain why it matters.

What We Believe

Everything we do is guided by a few fundamental principles.

Transparency

Government works best when its actions are visible, understandable, and open to public scrutiny.

Integrity

Public trust is earned through honesty, ethical leadership, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources.

Accountability

Every public official, department, and governing body should be accountable to the citizens they serve.

Respect for Facts

We believe informed discussion begins with accurate information, reliable documentation, and careful research.

People may disagree on solutions—and that's healthy in a democracy.

But meaningful conversations should begin with a shared understanding of the facts.

Why the Name "Fighting4Freeport"?

Our name reflects our commitment to advocating for our community—not fighting against it.

Fighting for ethical public service.

Fighting for a stronger, more engaged Freeport.
